Message in a Bottle

When I met Trey, I could just see how much she loves Michael. It radiates from her in a soft glow, warm smile and a magical twinkle in her eye when she talks about their relationship. You can imagine how intense the glow is when she spoke about his proposal. She had no clue Michael was planning to ask her and Michael did well to keep that a secret right up until she turned around and saw him on one knee.

For years, they have spent a lot of time with friends and family camping and enjoying events at Delany Creek Park. It must have been an easy decision for Michael to know the place to ask Trey to marry him but the plan took a little more heavy thinking. So, Michael told Trey about a special event that was held at Delany the day before. At this event, children placed a written message in a bottle. They then sent the bottle floating down the river to hopefully be found by someone who would write a letter back telling the child they found their bottle. Then he asked her if she would like to go find one. Trey, of course, thought it was a great idea and was already making plans about what they should write to the child who’s bottle they found.

There they are on a boat…Trey looking a little disappointed to not see any bottles and Michael waiting for the moment Trey was consumed in her search before he silently places a bottle in the water. His plan was perfectly executed. Trey scoops up the bottle exclaiming she found one and Michael behind her patiently waiting for her to realize what was going on. As she opens the message, there is a picture of her and Michael on the paper and an invitation to a wedding. Stunned and a little confused at first, she turns around to Michael for an explanation and the sensation of knowledge hits her upon seeing Michael knelt.

Now, I know everyone says that love isn’t like we see on television or in the movies but I’m telling you it is out there and I’m privileged to see it all the time in the couples I photograph. We call them “cheesy love films” and I found it ironic when Trey exclaimed her and Michael as “cheesy”….they have “it”…that head over heels love you see in all those “cheesy love films” and its adorable! These two are real and if true love is by definition in our society “cheesy”, well, I think we all have something to learn from Michael and Trey…perhaps trying too hard is the secret to sharing a love that will last a lifetime!

Take a few steps back in time and picture a beautiful skyline cut through with picturesque mountains; the proposal. Sarah and Luke were spending time together in the Word; studying scriptures on love and marriage. Luke says "Well, I guess I should bookmark this verse for future reference..." He lays a bookmark on the page; tied to the ribbon is the ring.

Sarah and Luke are one of the brave ones. A couple that braved the difficulty of a long distance relationship; she lived here in Indiana and Luke lived in Chicago, IL. On September 17th they said their vows at Sarah's aunt and uncle's beautiful home in Columbus, IN. They are now enjoying unlimited quality time together in Hawaii for their honeymoon...then life as a married couple (no more long distance!) awaits their arrival in Chicago!!

Over the weekend, I meet with an old high school friend to take pictures of her niece and nephew. We met up at Lake Iola in Scottsburg, IN. There is nothing more annoying than when it looks like rain on a day you have outdoor sessions booked! Thankfully, we were caught in just a little drizzle; however, we didn't let the drizzle or bleak weather dampen our spirits. Daisy and Tyson were a couple of awesome kids to work with. They both listened so well to direction and we were able to capture some very nice images for their families. Here are just a few!

Simply Significant

It is time to focus on the simple things of life. "Simply Significant" blogs posts are all about the little things and/or moments in my life that I might normally take for granted on any given day and why something so simple is also so significant.

1. S. Pellegrino Sparkling Natural Mineral Water. I have always had the unique taste for sparkling water but after visiting Berlin, Germany it has a whole new special place in my heart. It is now comfort water. You know how comfort food works? Like grilled cheese and tomato soup; a familiar favorite from my youth. It gives you the warm fuzzies with a healthy dose of good memories.

2. My son Aced his first test in first grade. I was genuinely concerned that he was going to have a hard time. The second week of school was a nightmare! He just would not bring home his homework or agenda. He got an F on his citizenship strip; a weekly grade for behavior and things like turning in homework every day. The third week, things got better..then he brought home his test with a BIG RED A!! Needless to say, I was a proud momma. There is still hope for A's on his report card!

3. Sunrises. This morning I watched a beautiful orange and pink filled sky light up the day. Is there anything else one can say about this? The world we live in can be harsh yet the beauty remains in the simplest of things like a sunrise. How many of us take a beautiful sunrise for granted; show of hands? Mine is up there! Today, I stopped and was reminded that God is magnificent. His creation is beautiful and I am one of his creations.

So, there you have it. Three things that are just simply significant.

TGIF + Loving My Job

Thank God its Friday! Really, not just as a statement, but I genuinely thank God for Fridays. Most individuals are thanking the heavenly Father for the weekend because they have the next couple of days off work; two whole days to play! Well, I suppose I am a little backwards in nature and I am okay with that because normal is just, well, boring...I prefer to remain a little eccentric. So, I am thankful for Fridays for the reason that I GET to work over the weekend and because I am in love what I do, its also my play time.
As a stay at home mother of little ones, my hours are around the clock; however, the weekends are when most of my photographic hours take place. Like most photographer's, I enjoy editing and playing with my captures in photoshop but after a full week of editing, I get cabin fever. The fever is worse when you add invoicing, marketing and advertising, paying bills, processing orders, and all of the other office type work that has most of us photographer's dreaming of the day when we can just hire someone to do for us! My point is, I long to get out and work with my clients and get back behind the camera...its like my medicine. AND - this weather here the last couple of days really have caused a dangerously high fever so, needless to repeat myself, TGIF!!

Say hello to three fabulous sisters! I totally heart these ladies & their mom and dad; Russell and Kelly! This family has been an amazing blessing to my family. These girls are always here for me...ready, willing and able to help. I often call upon them to babysit my little ones. As a thank you for allowing my husband and I to spend the day at Holiday World kid-free over the summer, I offered them a photo shoot. Over the past weekend, we met up and drove to Scottsburg to one of my favorite, funky locations "The Old Can Factory" (or Corn Factory, I've heard mixed thoughts on what the place is really called!) Regardless of what it is called, it is a photographer's dream for not only really cool backgrounds but also some spectacular natural light options. Here a just a few of the many amazing captures.

Basti & Sophie Married!

I cannot believe I am already home in the States! I had the most amazing time in Germany. Basti and Sophie were married at a church in Berlin then we drove to Castle Boitzenburg in Brandenburg, Germany for the reception; stopping along the way to capture some amazing images of the newly married couple. This couple is amazing; I know I always say that, but it still holds true. I believe I am blessed to be chosen by some of the most fantastic people to photograph their wedding day. For this couple, it was extra special because they are also very dear friends of mine. You can imagine my excitement when they asked me to travel to photograph their special day!
Everything about the day was perfect...we even had the nice clouds we were hoping for! Clouds make any landscape portrait interesting but the colors in this field were breathtaking...fabulous couple, fabulous portrait!
And, I love Photoshop conversions; this one is one of my particular favorites; very soft and warm and I personally think it gives the image an old world feel; love unique!

Josh + Brittany Married!

Cheers to another fabulous couple! Josh and Brittany tied the knot on June 12th, 2010. We were a little afraid of the weather; it was POURING down rain early that morning when I met Brittany and the girls at the La Mode Salon for hair and make up. The ceremony was planned to take place outdoors in the garden gazebo at Simmons Winery . Thankfully, the sun peeked out just before we were headed to her mom's house to capture pictures of Brittany getting in her dress. With the sun; however, came unbelievable heat! We were so grateful for the cool air of the Banquet Hall! The sun stayed true the rest of the day helping us create beautiful outdoor portraits complimenting their garden wedding theme. The whole day was nothing less than perfect! Congratulations again Josh and Brittany! I hope you are enjoying your California honeymoon. Things to Think About: "Finding a Photographer For Your Wedding"

Well, let's get straight to the point!

One, do they have a contract? This is so very important! A contract protects your investment and guarantees that the photographer will be there to cover the event. I have had a total of six (so far!) call me this year asking if I am available for their wedding and then briefly explain the reason behind them calling so last minute....their photographer backed out on them. Unfortunately, I was booked but I recommend a few photographers for them to call and ask their availability. You don't want this to happen to you! The last thing you want is to be rushing to find a photographer to cover your special day. Which leads me to the second thing to think about.

Two, meet potential photographer's IN PERSON. You will want to make sure you really like this person because he or she is going to be with you ALL day, interacting with all your friends and family. You want to be sure that you like them NOT just their work. Your photographer can literally make or break your whole day. The only way to be sure this person will represent you professionally and is passionate about not only photographing your wedding but about taking really good care of you on your wedding day is to meet with them. A couple of things to look for include how they are dressed for your first meeting (should be PROFESSIONAL and will give you an idea of what to expect to see them wearing on the wedding day) and the questions they ask (they should be asking about YOU...how you met, how he proposed, what you do for a living). These types of questions let you know they care about YOU which means they will take good care of you on your wedding day. Meeting with potential photographers also enables you to view samples of their work...the WHOLE wedding day, not just the line-up of their best captures.

Three, do they have happy clients? If you don't find any testimonials from clients on their website, ask for them. You want to know what others thought about their services and products. Testimonials are a good insight to their personality through the client's eyes. Remember, the testimonial should have names (first and last) and location, so if you really wanted to, you could look them up and call them just to ask if they said what the photographer said they said.

Four, do they have a guarantee, in writing? What happens if you don't like your pictures? What happens if the album spine breaks one week after you receive it? A photographer that offers a money back guarantee is confident in their service and products so you can be confident you will be thrilled with your images and products.

Five, do they have an organized plan? Photographers who have some experience with weddings know that it's not just a "show up and take pictures" type of event. Weddings take planning and your photographer should help you with this. An organized plan will help everyone involved know when and where to be, ready for pictures. An organized plan helps the day go much smoother, period.

Six, bet you didn't think you had to take so much into consideration, read over the "What makes a professional photographer". There are no second chances in wedding photography yet so many leave the memories of this very important day in the hands of a "friend photographer". Don't' make this mistake! Not only are you increasing your chances for your photographer to back out on you (over half of the folks who called me this year had a "friend photographer") and cause stress on that relationship and your plans but I honestly believe you will regret it; maybe not right away but you will one day regret your decision to not go with a professional . If you don't believe me, I know a few people you can talk to about it who made the decision to hire a "friend photographer."

Seven, don't hesitate in booking early. Photographers are one of the fastest booking wedding vendors! First, booking early gets you discounts and we all like saving money, don't we?! Secondly, you ensure that you get the photographer you really liked when you book before anyone else does. So, when you find the photographer who can offer you want you want in your budget and you really like him or her...don't wait to book or they might get booked by someone else then you've missed out and have to start the search all over again!

Eight, I guess we should touch on prices. Remember that if you are looking into hiring a "Studio" photographer, you can expect to spend...well, most of the time, though not all of the time, a lot. These photographers have bills to pay like mortgages. (Also, remember to ask to meet with the person who's sample work they are showing you...some studios hire consultants and have several photographers they dispatch out to events). Then there are photographers who work from home...again, refer to what makes a professional and you will easily decipher the right choice for your wedding. These photographer's prices should be much more fair for the average consumer's budget because most of them won't have large business over head to pay every month. Of course their business plan also plays a role in pricing...are they high clientele, low price or high price, low clientele? You see, if you charge MORE, you can work LESS and if you charge LESS then you work MORE. Take location into consideration too, Indianapolis photographers can charge more because overall there is more money up there. In a nut shell though, really, we are all pretty close to the same prices in any given location which is why price should not be the deciding factor.

Nine, do they offer quality products? A professional offers a product that will last a lifetime...if it doesn't, you don't pay to replace it, the photographer does (if they guaranteed it). Local labs just don't offer the quality products that are going to last generations...they offer immediate satisfaction. The fact of the matter is, their low price is mostly because you will be back in a few years replacing the product to maintain its overall quality of life. Make sure you professional uses a professional lab; ask for the name, look it up, make sure it's something only a photographer with a tax id can use.

Ten, I think we will make this the last one...you have a lot to think about now! Ask the photographer about their experience with weddings (trust me, weddings are a different kind of animal!). You want to invest your money with someone experienced. If they have only photographed one or two other weddings, I wouldn't say they are experienced. They should be building their experience through an apprenticeship, not by asking you to pay them to photograph your wedding. Their inexperience will frustrate you, your fiancé, your friends and family on a really important day and it will show in your pictures.
And, there ya go! Ten good things to think about when looking for a wedding photographer. Happy hunting!

"Things To Think About: What Makes a Professional Photographer?"

I've asked the question before; I've asked it of myself and I've asked you. What makes a professional photographer? If you look up the word "professional" in the dictionary, you will find a definition that says something along the lines of following an occupation as a means of livelihood or for gain, in other words, getting paid for doing what you do. Well, that leaves a lot to bargain for, doesn't it? In a nut shell, when it comes to photography, if you pick up a camera and someone is willing to pay you to take their picture, you are a professional. Whoa! Shouldn't we be taking a step further? How about this second definition from dictionary.com: a person who earns a living in a sport or other occupation frequently engaged in by amateurs; a golf professional. Someone tell me why an individual can golf and get paid for it while others golf and never get paid for it. On the flip side, why are so many willing to pay an amateur to take pictures of one of the most important days of their lives, placing the very memory of their event into that persons hands? It seems the ones who get paid to golf have some kind of talent and expertise that the rest don't...someone took it farther...

Somewhere in some dictionary, you might also read that professionalism has to do with being a expert in some field. Which leads to the question...What makes an expert? Education, experience or both? I think most would agree it takes both and I would add an emphasis on some passion; especially with the field of photography. Lose your passion, lose your vision and you lose your artistic ability rather quickly; beware the "burn out". Passion gets you in field to begin with. Remember the first time you realized your passion for photography? In most of our cases as photographers, there was something that grabbed us and made us say, "I am meant to do this very thing and this is why..." (I will share my story in another post). If that didn't happen to you...you have not found passion in the art that is photography and you won't make it far and if it did and you have forgotten it, you won't make it much farther. Cold, hard truth. Passion is what sets us apart and drives our creative eye...where does your passion lie?

If you have passion, you are closer to becoming a professional but do you have education? What education does it take to make you a professional? Is it college? It wasn't for me; yes, you may be surprised to learn I have not a single collage class in photography. Actually, I have my business degree. I had the eye and choose to enhance it through experience rather than education. I knew I wanted my own business in this field. Personally, mom told me I was like my dad in that I was a "Jack of All Trades". I believe God blesses everything I do, just like Joseph, I always succeeded. I was; however, never happy working for someone else, punching a time clock for a paycheck. I would grow bored and try something new...I've done everything including retail, nursing, and banking. It took a few bumps in the road to get to where I needed to be but I finally landed a job with a photographer of twenty five years....totally believe God had his hand in every moment.(That is another story you will read about in future posts!) For the next two years, I learned from him through hands on experiences while obtaining my business degree. If you know you want to make a business out of your passion for photography, be sure you have your passion for motivation and if you have to choose between photography classes or business classes...choose business; you won't regret it. And if there is one thing that stands true about photography, you always learn because it is always changing, especially if you're in the business of photography. I never get bored anymore!

Now, let's talk about experience. This is vital. If you have never photographed a wedding, don't ask to be paid...in fact, do your friend a favor and recommend they hire a professional and ask the professional if it is okay with you snapping a few pictures throughout the day. A professional with a passionate attitude will not have a problem with you being around, in fact, should mentor you when possible; just remain respectful to the professionals duties and remember that they did get paid to get the shots. You are better off to watch and learn. Another option is to find a professional photographer to work as an apprentice for; don't expect to get paid as an apprentice...it is your opportunity to learn so that one day you can get paid. If you are interested in photography as a career, let me know...I'd be happy to allow you to tag along. Photography involves a lot of free work; especially in the beginning but even as you are developed which is why it is crucial that your motivation and passion not lie in the money. I gave myself two years of experience photographing as a second and assisting the master photographer at his paid events before I attempted to go on my own. I get better with each event still and always, always learn something new. Weddings take a lot of planning...it's not just about showing up and taking pictures. Without an organized plan, you will be frustrated and your bride and groom along with all their friends and family will be frustrated with you. Have a plan and realize that well thought out plans often develop out of first hand experiences.

Photography is like any other profession. Without passion, education, and experience you won't get to the point where you can have a successful business. Some people may seek you out to photograph but overall, individuals seek a professional for a reason. I think sometimes the average consumer does not understand why they do and it is your job as the professional to educate them. Professional photographers have obtained expertise in not only being in the right place at the right time to capture the moment before it is gone forever but in displaying professionalism; from the way they dress for events to their actions and attitude on the job towards everyone involved. A professional has taken time to educate themselves about lighting, posing, and camera settings, holds a certain passion for motivation of capturing moments, and has gained experience worthy to get paid for. I absolutely heart this family! Matthew and Isabella are two are the cutest kids and Casey and Nathanial are one of the sweetest couples I have the pleasure of working with! These kiddos have a ton of personality and are so much fun to work with. And as always, Casey never fails to coordinate fabulous outfits! We met up at the IMA for their family session and Bia's One Year Old portraits. It was hot, hot, hot but we captured some pretty awesome images before everyone was dripping with sweat, ew but true...talk about a spin on the colder days we had just last week! This past weekend held a beautiful wedding at the Immanuel Lutheran Church here in Seymour, IN. Jeremy and Rachel have been together for 8 years and tied the not on May 22, 2010 and it was perfect wedding day weather! The maid of honor's toast including letting everyone know that Rachel would talk about this day when they were younger and state that they would all be wearing blue jeans but there she was in a beautiful gown and pink heels with her bridesmaids decked out in super cute pink dresses and silver shoes! I met with Jeremy and Rachel in Duddleytown out at Jeremy's grandmothers farm, where him and Rachel spend most of their time, to photograph their engagement session. Their wedding is upcoming in May at the beautiful Immanuel Lutheran Church.
The first time I met Rachel was back in January of 2009 at The Republic's bridal fair and then she seen me again at the Jackson Co. Fair which was where I first met Jeremy, and her father, who also has a passion for photography. As the father of the bride; however, he was not ready to take on two major responsibilities so they hired me to photograph the wedding so that he can focus on his little girl getting married!

We all want something that is priced out of our budget but just because you can't afford it, doesn't mean you shouldn't have it! I'm not talking about credit cards (my husband hates credit card debt and well, so do I...my biz phrase "Keep your overhead low, so you can pass the savings to your clients...afterall, if it wasn't for them none of this would even be possible!) I'm actually talking about a wedding photography registry account with [r]r.photo.

It works similar to any registry but instead of scanning dishes, you provide my contact info to friends and family and let them know about your registry...and instead of receiving a toaster, you receive gift amounts from friends and family for your wedding photography allowing you the opportunity to get exactly what you want while staying in your budget! Your guests will love giving you such a memorable gift, they'll love how easy it is and you'll love getting what you want!

Here's how it works:

1. I start the registry when you let me know that you want an account.

2. You contact friends and family to provide them with my contact info, letting them know about your registry. (One easy way to do this would be adding a note in with the save the date cards, shower or wedding invitations)

3. Your friends and family contact me with their payment info. and request any gift amount to be placed in your account. That's it! They will receive a gift receipt; most often placed in a card to let you know they took part in giving you a gift that will last a lifetime.

4. After the wedding, you use the balance in your account to order whatever you want from your wedding photography; albums, portraits, canvases, framing, etc. If you have a little extra than you might have expected, you can also use the amount towards your engagement photography!

I work hard to make it easy for couples to get a photographer they love for a price that won't extend their budget. Everyone deserves professional, beautiful wedding photos. I refuse to dive into debt with my business so that I can offer my services and products for a reasonable price and I refuse to turn away a bride with the desire to have a professional photograph on her wedding day simply because her budget will not allow it. I hope this registry will provide new opportunities for budget concious brides who know the importance of having a professional photographer on their wedding day.

January 2, 2010 was one of the coldest weddings I have ever attended! Despite the cold weather, Nikki and Matt maintained that warm personality I just loved seeing radiate from them; such a fantastic couple! Matt was every bit ready to have Nikki as his bride...I think I heard him say a few times at the reception "Let me ask the wife!" :) It simply came as instinct for him as if he'd been saying it forever. My Noah is 9 months!

I gotta show off my chunky monkey! Noah is 9 months old; I love, love this pic I got of him the other night. Isn't he handsome? He's a spittin' image of his daddy. :) He is crawling allllll over the place and does that boy L-O-V-E his freedom; he can't stand to be put in anything thing that confines him from crawling or pulling himself up. He's developed quite a sparky personality. The grin you see here is on his face just about every minute of the day...one happy kid! We are very blessed.

Just Married! Isaac & Emily

When I met Emily, she told me she was hoping for snow on her wedding day...not a lot, just enough to look pretty. She got exactly what she hoped for on December 19th, 2009! Snow showeres came and went all day long and by the time the ceremony was over, her and Isaac had jingle bells being rung by family and friends as they made their exit into the snow filled air! The day was filled with much joy and lots of laughter as many knew, and some came to learn, how Isaac and Emily came to be a couple. Emily actually foretold her marrying Isaac all the way back in preschool! A beautiful couple with two amazing families and good friends made for a fabulous and beautiful wedding. Congratulations Isaac and Emily...may your love always be as strong as it was on this day and blessed to the fullest!

To all my loyal clients and fans...I must send apologies for not keeping up on my blog. I have tons of recent work to post; however, and as my favorite phrase has been these last several weeks, time has been something like a speeding bullet! I've had a couple of winter weddings throughout the holidays and between those and well, the holidays, I've not had the time to post any recent images for your viewing enjoyment. I am working hard to catch up on everything but my clients products by all means come first. As soon as I get the chance I will post some new images for you all.

Eric and Sandy were married October 24th, 2009 at the beautiful St. Johns Church in Greensburg, Indiana. The morning weather was a little misty but that didn't dampen Sandy's spirits. She was armed with four fabulous bridesmaids and an umbrella! Myself and guests were in awe of an absolutely beautiful ceremony complete with a loud stir of excitement among the guests as the bagpipes played for Sandy's entrance. On into the afternoon, the reception was outstanding. Live beta fish in bowls tastefully served as centerpieces in the Knights of Columbus hall. I hope everyone enjoyed the holiday. I had such a fabulous weekend! A very good friend whom lives all the way in Berlin, Germany came to the States for a visit. Sophie was an exchange student my junior year in high school; our friendship has been blessed on into the years. I got to spend some time with her and also make a new friend; her boyfriend, Basti, whom was a very pleasant and handsome guy. These two make a beautiful pair! On Monday I had the opportunity to take her to the gorgeous gardens and grounds at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. We were disappointed to learn the museum was closed; however, we had a lovely time walking around the gardens and taking lots of pictures! Here are my favorites of her and Basti...I have a hunch they will soon be engaged so it was my absolute pleasure to do this for them. It was a joy to see you, Sophie and great to meet you, Basti! I pray blessings and safe travels to you both.

Calendar Babies & Kids Year End Special

Kent and Courtney were married August 8th, 2009! I apologize for the delay in posting for you guys...I wanted to have a slideshow for you on the new site/blog so I waited a little bit. It was a beautiful wedding at her brother's home (mansion,rather!) in Fortville, Indiana. The wind forced us indoors for the ceremony; however, it was beautiful nonetheless! I loved that they did the sand unity instead of a candle. As with every wedding, there were some bloopers...in Kent and Courtney's case the Maid of Honor forgot the rings! It stirred some giggles later at the reception. Jubilee did an awesome job with the floral arrangements and dinner was superb! Everything was just fabulous.
